Summary from last years club tournament held in September 2007
The Mannamead Tennis Club Tournament was highly successful attracting 45 entries and apart from one wet day enjoyed fine and sunny weather.
Glen Richards the current Plymouth Champion added another title with a powerful display in the Mens Singles. In four matches Richards conceded just seven games. In his semi final Richards beat Andy Ward a Division 1 player by
6-1 ; 6-2 and in the final he was even more severe on another Division 1 player Rory Harries by 6-1 ; 6-0. There were no surprises in the early rounds as all four seeded players reached the semi- final stage.
The Ladies Singles event was held on a round robin basis and the holder Angharad Hackett could not repeat last year’s victory. The title was settled in the match between Clare Bulford and Karen Wood. In three sets Bulford came from a set down to repeat her Plymouth Championship win against Wood. However this was a much closer match before Bulford won by 6-7 ; 6-1 ; 10-6 (t/b).
After a tough three set first round win in the Mens Doubles Nathan Whitfield and Stephen Ackrell had walk overs into the final of the Mens Doubles.
Their opponents Richard Avent and Gary Phillips by contrast twice had to recover from the loss of the first set and did well in the semi final to beat Mickey Rowe and Ken McNess by 3-6 ; 6-2 ; 10-8(t/b). In the final Avent and Phillips repeated their recipe for success by again losing the first set in beating Whitfield and Ackrell 2-6 ; 7-5 ; 10-3 (t/b).
In the Ladies Doubles Josie Debnam and Lynda Harris just overcame Clare Bulford and Heather Dixon by 6-2 ; 1-6 ; 10-5 (t/b) in the semi final but had an easier final win against Angharad Hackett and Sarah Ellson by 6-4 ; 6-0.
Richard Avent collected his second title when partnered by Sarah Ellson they won the Mixed Doubles with Avent yet again involved in a recovery with a 6-7 (2-7) ; 6-3 ; 10-7 (t/b) win over Geoff Harris and Heather Dixon.
There was a very encouraging entry of 16 in the Junior Singles event with both finalists having three set semi final wins. Alex Peer-Jones beat Stephen Ackrell 6-4 ; 2-6 ; 10-1 (t/b) and John Mullin knocked out Perry Bailey by 2-6 ; 6-4 ; 10-5(t/b). The final was one of the best matches of the week with Peer -Jones finally getting the better of Mullin to win by 6-4 ; 1-6 ; 10-7(t/b).
Awards and prizes were presented by the Tournament Referee Andrew Leigh at the end of a very enjoyable week of Tennis.
